Merry Mischief, I Mean, Christmas

I love Christmas.  The strings of colorful lights… the tree decked out with 20 years of keepsake ornaments… the food (especially chocolate!)  What I don’t love is the commercialized nature of Christmas.  I don’t “buy” into the need for the latest expensive gadget or the need to rack up a credit card balance that I will be paying on through Independence Day (oh, the irony!)

I decided to have some fun (my 14-year-old said that couldn’t be done!) and share my cats-view of Christmas through more photos of some of my kitties.  So, if you don’t like cats… or Christmas… or humor, then this isn’t the post for you 🙂

This time of year, just a few shopping days til Christmas, stores perpetuate the need to shop by opening their doors 24-hours a day.  I imagine at this point, if you’re still convinced that the joy of Christmas can be put on a credit card, things might get a little “strained.” <groan>

Lesson learned… don’t wash strainer and leave on counter to dry… Lily thought it was the perfect lounge spot

Sometimes we’re too focused on the next “to-do” that we don’t realize the “purr-fect” gift is right under our noses… perhaps our time is more valuable than anything we can buy?

Lucy thinks, “If I don’t see you… you don’t see me!”

I’m guilty of looking for some sense of control in a world that feels so out of control, but it gets to the point I give up, and accept that all the pieces may  not come together as I planned.

I had “help” assembling a dual monitor stand for my work space

Now, by give up, I don’t mean that I cease to care about anything.  It’s more about weighing the best use of my time.  So, instead of joining the masses spending money, I stay in and organize something, write something,  or go for a hike.  I could also choose to enjoy the kitties,  or load the dishwasher… or in this case, both!

What is the proper way to load a cat?! I have to be sneaky when I load dishes because Lucy is fascinated by the dishwasher. If only I could say the same for my kids….

Whatever your views of the holiday season, I think we can all agree that when it gets too much, it’s nice to take a break… to stay in bed late and seek out our inner cat.

I like the way Lizzy thinks… sleep, eat, sleep some more and repeat!

I used to enjoy hiking and snapping pictures along the way. I used to have creative ideas jotted on pieces of paper stacked on my desk. I used to laugh and look forward to spending time with others. I used to write. A lot. Through this blog, I'm making an effort each day to find myself.

  1. That picture of Lucy in the dishwasher is priceless! Dallas never was fascinated by ours (of course, all the food is off the dishes by the time they go in, so there’s that!!). But he’s totally approving the sleep, eat, repeat mantra. A pet’s life is sooooo hard, right?! Happy Christmas to you — you sound very wise not to go into debt just for one day’s pleasure!

    1. Lucy is definitely curious. My washer and dryer are in a closet in the hallway and both Lucy and Lily love to run in there when I open the doors. I don’t like them in there because they climb behind the washer and dryer and I don’t want them messing with the hoses and stuff. It’s an ongoing battle 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and get to spend some time living like our pets- sleep, eat, sleep and repeat!

  2. Yea for Christmas and Catmas !!!!!
(putting this here and your old place to make sure you see it)
Waiting for sunset on Christmas Eve is like standing toes-over-the-edge on a high diving board.
Every year we’d cruise casually by the window to keep an eye on the sun’s progress until it was officially evening.
Then the shout “Christmas Eve Gift!” would ring out.
You see, the traditions says that the first person to voice that phrase on Christmas Eve to another would be graced with good fortune and joy all the next year.
(And of course, whomever was first won. Everything was a contest…)
It’s more difficult to be first now with caller ID.
As all those who have become my friends in blogland are spread widely across time zones, I’d like to wish you all “Christmas Eve Gift” now.
And as I already feel so fortunate to have such wonderful readers and writers in this neighborhood, I wish to share any phrase acquired good fortune and joy with you in thanks.
No matter where you are or what you are guided by, hope you have a very merry Christmas and a new year full of adventure and joy.
Peace on earth and goodwill towards all creatures great and small.

    1. I hope you had a merry Christmas, Phil! I am so behind on reading and writing, and everything really, but eventually I’ll find a groove, I think. Looking forward to catching back up with your creative and clever posts. Happy new year, too. (Can’t believe it’s already 2017!)

  3. Absolutely! Cats know exactly how to get what they want! Thanks for sharing fellow cat lover. We have just adopted two black kitties, Nera and Ebony and their brother Ziggy. They are in hiding at the moment and will need time to settle I think. I have a poetry blog here on WordPress and this week’s poems are about cats in case you have time to look? Have a good day, Sam 🙂
